Blood Oxygen Feature Missing from U.S. Series 10 Apple Watch
At Monday's iPhone 16 event, Apple unveiled several new health features, but one familiar feature was absent: the blood oxygen sensor. Originally introduced with the Series 6, this feature will not be available on Series 10 models in the U.S. However, it will still be accessible in other countries.
Patent Dispute with Masimo Behind the Feature’s Removal
The absence of the blood oxygen sensor is the result of Apple’s ongoing patent dispute with medical device company Masimo. This legal battle led Apple to disable the feature on the Series 9 and Ultra 2 models late last year. It remains unclear whether the Series 10 models lack the feature due to a hardware change or if it's simply disabled through software, like the Series 9. We’ll know more once teardowns are conducted after the smartwatch’s release.
Apple's Ongoing Legal Battle with Masimo
Apple has been actively fighting Masimo’s lawsuit from the outset. After a ban on the feature was reinstated in January, Apple sought to implement a similar ban on Masimo’s Freedom health watch.
New Global Health Features Announced for Series 10
Despite the loss of the blood oxygen sensor, Apple introduced new health features for the Series 10, including sleep apnea detection, which will be available to users worldwide.
